Robert Taft was born in 1889 to William Howard Taft.  Taft was a U.S. Senator from Ohio from 1939 until his death in 1953.  He briefly served as the 9th Senate Majority Leader for the last year of his life.  Taft was known for being a staunch non-interventionist and opposing New Deal policies.  He sponsored the Taft-Hartley Act in 1947.  The Act was largely aimed at controlling union practices and prohibited unions and corporations from making independent donations to federal campaigns.
